Management ideas from the greats leaders of history: Caesar between haste, ambition and consensus

Great managers often look to the future, the latest trends and upcoming innovations to prepare for the future. Sometimes, however, there are great teachings and ideas even in the past, left by those who have been able to write history. This new series of The European House Ambrosetti looks back, trying to draw inspiration from the great leaders of the past who, perhaps, today would have been great business managers.

How to act when you start from a position of strategic disadvantage? Where and how to find new allies? How do you beat innovative competitors?

In this second meeting, Andrea Lipparini, Professor of Strategy at the University of Bologna, will tell us how Julius Caesar, probably the greatest leader in the history of Rome, faced these extremely managerial dilemmas. Throughout his career, Caesar distinguished himself for the ability to combine lightning-fast intuitions, at times unscrupulous, strategies planned down to the smallest detail. To this he combined the ability to surround himself with the best men, of whom he was able to earn trust and absolute fidelity. Eventually, he fell because his personal ambition brought him into conflict with his "CDA", the Senate, in the epilogue we all know.

  • haste: know how to act quickly balancing intuition and rationality
  • Build a winning team: Choose and keep your team motivated
  • pursue ambitions without alienating stakeholders.
